Bar Harbor & Acadia National Park City Guide
Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park is a great vacation destination for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. Located on Mount Desert Island off the coast of southeastern Maine, Bar Harbor is surrounded on three sides by Acadia National Park and on the fourth by the Atlantic Ocean.
Bar Harbor was an upper-class resort town in the 19th century, but many of the town’s grand mansions were destroyed in a fire that devastated the island in 1947. Some of the buildings that survived have been converted into elegant inns and quaint restaurants. West Street, a National Historic District, features some of the grand cottages that survived the fire along with unique shops, cafes, and the working waterfront lined with fishing boats and yachts.
Acadia National Park covers nearly 41,000 acres of mountains, woodlands, lakes, ponds and ocean shoreline. The site, sound, and smell of the ocean will please your senses as you take a leisurely stroll on the sand and cobblestone beaches. A shuttle-bus system helps relieve traffic in the summertime, the Park’s busiest season. The 20-mile Park Loop Road features many attractions, and visitors who want to get in touch with nature have many opportunities to explore Acadia on foot. More than three million visitors travel to Acadia National Park per year. The busiest months are July, August and September, and the slowest months are December, January and February.
A variety of outfitters, guides, mariners, suppliers, and instructors are on hand to assist visitors with the many outdoor activities and sightseeing possibilities in Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park.
Your “Maine” vacation destination is Bar Harbor and it is waiting to be explored – by foot, boat, or bike! With the abundance of water activities, shopping, and restaurant choices, your Maine vacation will be a memorable one.
