Bar Harbor was an upper-class resort town in the 19th century, but many of the town’s grand mansions were destroyed in a fire that devastated the island in 1947. West Street, a National Historic District, features some of the grand cottages that survived the fire along with unique shops, cafes, and the working waterfront lined with fishing boats and yachts.

Acadia National Park covers nearly 41,000 acres of mountains, woodlands, lakes, ponds and ocean shoreline. A shuttle-bus system helps relieve traffic in the summertime, the Park’s busiest season. The 20-mile Park Loop Road features many attractions, and visitors who want to get in touch with nature have many opportunities to explore Acadia on foot. More than three million visitors travel to Acadia National Park per year. The busiest months are July, August and September, and the slowest months are December, January and February.
